If you don’t know Shugg, now is the time to get acquainted. The hottest new artist from the heart of Massachusetts, Shugg is here to take control of rap with his undeniable talents, with spitfire flow, aggressive bars and nothing but truth in his lyrics.

As someone who has come out of the mud and taken off from the streets to the studio, Shugg proves that hard work, dedication and passion go a long way.

Describing himself, Shugg says, “I’m a #### from the outskirts of Boston, just trying to dress for his city. For the Twin Cities. I don’t like to say it like that, but I like to put myself in the most authentic category of all. I have to go hard, I feel like a #### like me knows what it takes to win. I try to do whatever I can to earn and support my family and everyone I love.

Most recently, Shugg released his latest music video for “Foreal”, which comes just after his previous release “Kenan & Kel”. Both discs serve as motivation to get out there and pursue your wildest dreams, proving that there is a light in the tunnel no matter what. Both records can be found on his upcoming album titled Nonfiction.

All hip-hop: How’s it going over there in Massachusetts?

Shugg: Dude, don’t get out of here. [laughs] No, it’s all right to come here a bit in the summer maybe, but they don’t call us Mass-holes for no reason. It’s cold here, people and weather. It’s not the best place to be, I’m not gonna lie to you.

All hip-hop: What was it like growing up there?

Shugg: I’m not gonna lie man, it hasn’t been easy growing up. It was my mom and I, we probably had 9 or 10 people in a two bedroom apartment. I never had the best living conditions growing up. I never had a cable, I never had a landline in my life. In the end, I wouldn’t trade any of this for nothing because it made me who I am. It made me appreciate s ###. Now I appreciate everything. I know nothing is promised because of this education. I saw my mom wrestle and I never want to see her wrestle again. This is why I do myself, and this is why I do what I do so hard.

All hip-hop: How did you get your name?

Shugg: I got it in high school, I was entering first year. Long story short, my trainer heard about me doing my little 1, 2, 1, 2. He said, “I heard you have sugar” or stuff like that. From that point on, it was a little joke inside. Everyone called me Shugg from there. I don’t want to say too much, but here they would have called the white girls “sugar”. So in high school, that’s what they called me. Shugga Shay, because in their minds they heard I had it like this. As I got older I couldn’t be an adult by calling themselves Sugar, so everyone calls me Shugg now.

All hip-hop: Favorite artists to come?

Shugg: Ooh, this is difficult. Right now, I would say Meek Mill is one of them. Gucci Mane is definitely a big inspiration. Jay-Z is the GOAT for me because no one is really better than Hov. Right now my two favorite artists are Baby Face Ray and me f ### with Icewear Vezzo.

All hip-hop: When did you realize you could make music for a living? Was there a turning point?

Shugg: Yeah, I went through some ### at the end of 2016. Some niggas hated me. I experienced a little something that I don’t really want to talk about, but it made me realize that the streets don’t promise anyone anything. Once I uploaded my first clip and my town showed me love and kissed me, it was wrapping. The minute I sold a ticket, I knew I could sell a million tickets. Because if I could do it once, I knew I could do it a million times. Once I saw that I thought, “Yeah, I could definitely take that to the basket.”

All hip-hop: You now have “Foreal”. How are you?

Shugg: I feel good. I’ve never had so much love, I’m not going to be in front. “Foreal” is doing the best of anything I’ve ever done, so I see the progression. It really has nothing to do with me, it has everything to do with us. I have a great team. I wouldn’t be s ### without my niggas. Snake maintains it. Collectively, that’s a lot of us and everyone has worked. It’s weird because like I said, it’s cold here. Massachusetts, Boston, I don’t know if you’ve heard, we’re Mass-Holes. People don’t really show love like that, it’s really bittersweet. But people are kissing me right now, so I love it. I know if I can win people over here then I can win people over there. So “Foreal” made me feel good, foreal foreal.

All hip-hop: Where did you save the disc?

Shugg: I record everything in my own studio. I have my own ### s, my own studio. I send everything else to this guy named John Scott. It is this n #### here. In fact, he just moved to LA right now. He works with DaBaby, Lil ‘Baby, Snoop Dogg, Jeezy, etc. It’s a big name.

All hip-hop: Where was the video shot? Best memory ?

Shugg: The video was shot in Providence, Rhode Island. The best memory was falling in love with one of the dancers.

All hip-hop: For real? [laughs]

Shugg: Hell yeah, I love one of them. We love each other, but not really, but really.

All hip-hop: Does she know?

Shugg: Does she know? S ###, she better know. Nah, she knows. We are cooling down.

All hip-hop: I created your video, “Kenan & Kel”, on Flaunt. How does this visual embody where you come from?

Shugg: It really shows you everything in a nutshell. Really, really, without going too crazy. “Kenan & Kel” is basically for the streets here because it is. When you listen to this track, that’s what’s really going on here. It clearly shows that yes, people might think Mass is arrogant, but there is a hood everywhere. “Kenan & Kel” definitely embodies that. It shows and talks about what’s really going on in the friendliest, most eye-catching way possible.

All hip-hop: How does it feel to see the Massachusetts rap scene explode?

Shugg: He feels good. It’s nice. I remember going to the club and just being a regular street nigga. Now when I go to the club, every club I go to spins my record. I hear DJs yelling at me, taking pictures with random people. It’s an indescribable feeling. I am truly blessed. It really is a chance.

All hip-hop: What do you want fans to take away from your story?

Shugg: If Shugg can do it, you can do it. Never give up. Never let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. It’s never too late to start following your dreams. You know the street is a lie. It’s a lovely place to take some life lessons, but don’t get caught up in the gravy. If you’re a real nigga and stay 10 feet away, God will help you no matter what.

All hip-hop: How is the independent grinding?

Shugg: I love him man, I love him. Because at the end of the day, I work hard for my money. Every time I put my own money in and see it tip over then I reap all the benefits and I really don’t have anyone telling me what to do, that’s a beautiful thing. I don’t know if I’ll ever sign a major deal, to be honest, unless the bag is awesome.

All hip-hop: Damn, that’s a statement. Why?

Shugg: If I could stand in front of the right number of people and show them what I’m working with, there wouldn’t be anything a label could really do for me. Apart from giving us money, but we already have money. Money is no longer really an issue. You know what it is, you create the engine, you create the monster and they reap the benefits. I thank the streets for giving me the knowledge to understand that if I could win a dollar once, I can do it a million times. You really don’t need too much outside help.

All hip-hop: 3 things you need in the studio all the time?

Shugg: A good atmosphere, good Zaza. Honestly, I need something cold to drink at all times. Without it, s ### becomes weird. I have been in this situation several times, I left an entire session because there is no water.

All hip-hop: What can we expect from your next album, Nonfiction?

Shugg: The truth. 110% the truth. The truth is in the pudding. Non-fiction, that’s what it is. I never lied, that’s my slogan. I’m real: it’s all ### there is no pen, no notepad. It all comes directly from the head and the heart. From Nonfiction, people are going to expect the truth and a big chunk of Shugg. Lots of n ##### capping and rap, there is no cap in my rap. I never lied, not once.

All hip-hop: Collaborations we should know about?

Shugg: At the moment, honestly not. We have a whole bunch of s ### in the works, but I haven’t done anything solid. We’re talking to the Icewear team right now. I ### with ABG Neal heavy.

As for the features at this time, honestly, we haven’t done any. We did everything just Shugg. Everyone’s like, “Yo, you gotta get these features. You have the money for the features. Yo man, I’m so busy doing what I’m doing. By the time I get to the studio, I type this s ### and go out. As for the main features, none at the moment, but they are definitely on the way.

All hip-hop: Any goals for you at this stage of your career?

Shugg: I would say 6 months to a year, to be in a really strong position where I’m not that ngga in New England or the Boston area. I want the world to know who I am. Well, not even the world. From 6 months to a year, I need the nation to know who I am. NOTggas f ### with me, that’s all. And the movement to gain weight, to take full advantage of this momentum that we have taken.

All hip-hop: What do you like to do for fun when you’re not working?

Shugg: What do I like to do for fun? [sighs] I can’t even tell you the last time I had fun. S ###, I like to smoke good weed. I like to laugh. I like to relax my niggas, catch a man vibe and have fun. What else do I like to do? I’m not really a club guy, I like casinos, not even in front of them. The casino will be the devil’s house, but we will be there. It is more or less that. I like to plot honestly. It’s really my sense of pleasure, to really work.

All hip-hop: Do you want to tell us anything else?

Shugg: Just be on the lookout. I promise we won’t stop there. Thank you for the long way for helping me, helping the team. F ### with your energy. I’m super grateful and grateful for you and this interview. Thank you and God bless the whole trap n #####.
