It was an ‘all on deck’ mentality for the Antlers on Friday and the Tivy boys responded with a 67-56 basketball win over Seguin at home to stay in contention for a playoff berth. district 26-5A with six games to go.

Mason Carlile tore up the Matadors for seven 3-pointers as part of his record 26 points for Tivy, who won his second in a row and improved to 5-5 in the district. Carlile was one of 10 Antlers to take over in the absence of season leading scorer Jaden Frausto, who missed the contest through illness.

Carlile entered the game averaging just over six points per game. Frausto gives the team nearly 15.

Quentin Vega triggered Tivy with 14 points, two more than his per-game average.

The remaining points were scored by Luke Johnston and Robert Jackson with six, Jake Layton with five, Mehki Fraizer with four, Jaxson Kincaid with three added, Cade Braaten with two and Braylon Ayala with one.

Layton also had a solid defensive performance, taking things up a notch without Seth Hendricks in the lineup. Hendricks was another regular starter and Layton turned three interceptions into three assists for Vega (twice) and Johnston.

“We talk about being ‘Tivy Strong,’ and this game was a testament to that,” Antlers head coach Joe Davis said. “No one can win or lose. Our guys were hungry and wanted to succeed. It was truly a collaborative effort.

The Matadors (2-7 for the district) challenged Tivy at times during the second and third quarters when Seguin scored buckets in flurries that only kept Tivy’s lead between four and seven points going into the opener. of the last frame.

Seven straight points in the final four minutes of the second quarter cut Tivy’s lead to 28-24 and six more in a row led Seguin by just three points at 39-36 with three minutes on the clock in the third period. .

Tivy opened his throttle to start the fourth quarter when Carlile scored a pair of treys and Vega scored a couple of field goals that propelled the Antlers 59-44. Seguin’s score in the final quarter was spotty, and the Matadors scored consecutive runs just once with less than a minute left in the game.

“The Seguin players are all athletes and we had to come back on defense and force them to play our style. We got into an aggressive zone in the fourth quarter to push them to do things they weren’t comfortable doing,” Davis said.

“We still control our own destiny,” Davis said of Tivy’s playoff chances.

Tivy’s 5-5 district record had the Antlers sitting in fifth place after Friday’s game and the team still has six league outings. They include New Braunfels Canyon and Dripping Springs trailing in the standings, as well as favorites Boerne Champion, Alamo Heights, Buda Johnson and San Antonio Veterans Memorial.

The Antlers are 14-12 overall and will play Johnson again on Friday.


Tivy swept Seguin in winning both undercollegiate games against the Matadors.

Junior Diversity

The junior varsity team held off Seguin’s fourth-quarter rally to win 49-46 after holding an 11-point lead after three periods.

Tyler Cory scored 13 points to beat Tivy.

Eight each were courtesy of Brandon Ramirez and Gunnar Abel. Brian Pescador, Andrew Valenzuela and Rylan Schumacher added six points each. Erik Rodriguez finished with two.


In the freshmen game, Tivy had no problem dealing with Seguin based on his 60-37 decision.

Jackson Way led the Antlers with 14 points and Izaiah Vega had 13 as part of Tivy’s double-digit duo.

Curtis Woods had six runs. Peyton Bailey and Darren Dominguez added five each. Carson Jones and Maurice King recorded four each for more points.

Will Jackson finished with three points, while two each were from Layton Edmonds, Taylor Lidiak and Aidan Landrum.
